Melon Semi-Finish

Now that the Quilt Show excitement has died down, I've had time to pick up my Melon Wedge again to finish stitching the rind. All the stitching is done now and I've just got the finishing-finishing left. I can't wait to put this together!

I went back to the LNS with the discount voucher that my husband got for voting (more splurging!) and bought some delicious yarns. Any excuse, right?

I couldn't get a good picture of all the color variation in these. They're Lang Mille Colori, and the color is just sumptuous. I'm hoping that buying the yarn will force me to learn how to knit socks, which I've been wanting to do for a while but haven't had the courage/time/energy.

Happy xxx's!

Quilt and Stitch Art Show 2014

So the 2014 Quilt and Stitch Art Show was this weekend! (If you don't know what I'm on about, I first talked about it here)

As I expected, I didn't win any of the prizes. Here's how it's set up: You give in your pieces. They display them for a week or so. During that time, visitors come to the show and vote for their favorites. You're allowed to vote for yourself and you're encouraged to bring everyone you know to vote. The result? It becomes a popularity contest. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitter and I'm not complaining. I enjoy being a part of the competition. But I kind of wish it was judged objectively, you know? Anyway, here are my two pieces, displayed in the show:

The great thing about this is that they give every person who votes a 15% off discount voucher from the host store, one of the LNSs here, which is normally super expensive. So I took advantage and splurged a little. Here's what I got:

I bought one yard of the blue fabric with the white flowers, and a fat quarter of the white fabric with the blue flowers. I love them! I've already got plans for the blue fabric...

They also gave us all a small goodie bag just for participating. It was filled with Brother memorabilia (they were sponsoring the event) and some fabric fat eighths:

Anyway, I had a great time and I'm so glad I joined in again (you can see what I entered last year here). I'll probably do it again next year. Hmm, I wonder what I'll enter...

Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts and for wishing me luck! I really appreciate it :D

Better Late than Never

I'm writing this a little later than I normally would - it's about 10 pm here - but I've had a super long day. I planned to post this in the morning, but I got busier than I expected with some friends. What started out as just brunch ended up being an 8-hour catch-up session, but it's a long weekend here, so why not, right?

I have more progress on the Melon Wedge!

I filled in all the seeds and now I've only got the rind left to stitch. I'm enjoying this so much, and it's so sad that it's such a quick stitch! I want it to last a bit longer...

This weekend is the Quilt and Art Show! I'll let you all know how it goes and share some pictures in the next post.

All right, I'm going to tidy up the house, get into my pajamas, and read a little. Have a fabulous weekend, everyone!

Big hugs,

More on the Melon

It's been pretty hectic around here, getting ready for the Quilt and Stitch show and doing last-minute things with my parents-in-law before they left. I've finally found some time to get back to my new start, the Melon Wedge.

I finished stitching the red fleshy part of the melon. All I've got left are the seeds, the rind, and then the construction!

Thanks for all your advice about the interfacing. I need to have a look around my LNS and see if I can find some here. The options are so limited here, though, that I suspect I might have to order it online. We'll see!

Lots of love,

The Quilt Show is Back!

I think I mentioned a couple of months ago that the annual Quilt and Stitch Show is back on here in Dubai. Well, I sent in pictures of two of my big framed pieces, the American Flag Quilt and my first-ever cross-stitching. Last week they finally got back to me to say that I've been accepted into the contest! Woohoo!

I entered the show last year with my Teddy Bear Quilt, which unfortunately didn't win. I was still so excited to be part of the show, and I'm going into it with the same attitude this time too.

I've been busy this week getting ready: they have a lot of requirements, including making sure everything is labeled, in a seal-able bag (urgh, finding bags that were wide enough was hard!), and printing out all the forms and pictures.

The contest started this weekend and will continue for a week. There's no judging - the viewing public gets to vote for their favorites in each category. I really wish there was online voting! That would be amazing.

So here are the pieces I've entered:

The American Flag Quilt, finished last year
My very first cross-stitching, a lovely verse from the Quran in Arabic
I'm so excited! Wish me luck :D

My Lucky Day

First, two of my classes got cancelled today, so I just had the one class in the morning and came home early - already an awesome start to the weekend (our weekend is Friday and Saturday). Then, on my way home, I swung by the post office and a load of goodies were waiting for me!

I made an order on 1-2-3 Stitch about a month ago and I love everything! I kept seeing these goodies on different blogs, so I finally gave in and bought them too.

I'm a little obsessed with sheep designs at the moment, so I had to get a couple of these Little House Needleworks Little Sheep Virtues. I picked "Joyfulness" and "Hope," my favorites, and I kitted them up with fabric and buttons.

I also had to finally get Lizzie Kate's Halloween Biscornu Kit. You all know I love biscornus, and this was just too cute to pass up! I threw in a pack of Boye size 13 needles - the needles I was using to finish up knitting projects were too small.

Love my new stash infusion! They're going to have to take a backseat while I work on my melon, but I'll get to them soon.

Happy xxx's!

A New Summery Start

Hi everyone! Thank you all so much for your sweet words with the Falling Star finish. I know it was a long time coming, but I appreciate all your support and love! :D

I've rooted through my stash and found the perfect new start: SamSarah's Farmer's Market Fresh Melon.

I've actually had this kitted up for nearly a year, but now that summer is starting this feels like the perfect project! I'm not stitching up the fruit banner, just the 3D melon, which I think is going to be a fun challenge. Here's my start:

I've stitched about half of the red for the melon. I'm stitching this on 28 count Olive Jobelan, with the recommended Weeks Dye Works and Sampler Threads.

I actually have a question about this. When I bought it I thought I was going to finish it off biscornu-style, but reading through the finishing instructions, I realized it'll be a little tougher. They recommend using fusible interfacing, which I've never used. Has anyone ever put this together? Is the fusible interfacing a must, or can I go without?

Happy belated Mother's Day to all you mothers!

Drumroll, Please!

Because I've finally finished La-D-Da's Falling Star!

The last part I had to finish stitching was the little stars above the umbrella. Here it is with its companion piece, Down by the Bay, which I finished off here back in December:

Falling Star was stitched on 32 count Platinum Lugana with the recommended NPI silks. Down by the Bay was stitched on 32 count Ivory Lugana, also with NPI silks. Now I'll have to find the time (and money) to get them framed!

Thanks to everyone who commented and supported me on this little La-D-Da journey!

Big hugs,

A Late but Super Important Update!

Well, this is a pretty late post. It's 11:40 pm here and I've had the longest day. I intended to post this morning, but the day kind of slipped away from me. I had my usual classes, plus I was substituting for another teacher. And my mother-in-law is in town, so after I came home I had to change super quickly and freshen up because we were all going out for dinner. Finally got back home, took a nice hot shower, and sat down with my laptop to type this out.

More great news on Falling Star! I finished the border!

It's not done yet though! Let's not all get excited. I actually put off the tiny stars on top of the umbrella until the end - it's a lot of confetti work and I just couldn't do all that counting. But we're so close now!

I should be able to finish this off really soon now. Yay!

Lots of love,

And the Umbrella is Done!

Hallellujah! Don't get me wrong, I'm loving this design, and it's always fun to stitch a La-D-Da piece, but this umbrella was taking forever! So here's the latest with Falling Star:

I've managed to power through and finish stitching the umbrella, and I've stitched the words "catch a" on the left.

But I'm far from being done with this piece! I still have the little stars to stitch on top of the umbrella, and the border of course.

Happy xxx's!
