Quilt Square 43

I have been so ridiculously busy at work. This past week was the final exam, which of course means two hours of proctoring, followed by an entire day of grading. Then there are wrap-up meetings and grade inputs and paperwork to finish. Oy.

On top of all this, we received news earlier this week from the head of our department that they're going to be seriously down-sizing due to administrative mumbo jumbo and won't be hiring as many of us as they usually do (for the past two years I've been teaching part-time on a semester-by-semester basis, so it's not a very stable job).

Anyway, they're going to let us know who they're picking to stay in a couple of weeks. Basically, out of 12 people who are working there right now, they're only asking 5 to come back. I don't know how good my chances are, and just in case I submitted my resume to another department in the university, who have told me that they'll get back to me about a potential position at the end of August. This is going to be a stressful summer, that's for sure! Any positive thoughts you guys have handy, please send them my way!

Once the chaos had died down, I managed to stitch another square onto the American Flag Quilt.

This is Montana (which, for some reason, I kept re-checking the spelling of. It looks a little odd when I stitched it up!). The Big Sky State was admitted to the union on November 8, 1889, making it the 41st.

I am positively itching to get to this big pile of Wendy Pampas yarn that I picked up from the post office this week. And now the semester is over, I can play as much as I want! Woohoo!

Huge hugs,

The Quilt Show

The Quilt & Stitch Art show was earlier this week, and, as I expected, my sweet little Teddy Bear Quilt didn't win any of the prizes (the competition was fierce!), but I'm glad we joined in anyway (if you don't know what I'm talking about, I brought it up here).

My little quilt on display!

It didn't matter - I had a fantastic time and I'm definitely going to enter something next year too. I dragged my husband along with me to the ceremony, which he called "The Sewing Oscars," isn't that hilarious? He was quite bored, to say the least, but it was still so sweet of him to come with me.

Quite happy,

Quilt Square 42

It's been a couple of weeks, but I've finally picked the American Flag Quilt back up again!

This latest square is South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore State joined the union on November 2, 1889, making it the 40th state (YAY! I've only got ten more states to go!)

Good news: I'm feeling much better. This cold never got very bad, but it was a pain. For a few days I couldn't hear out of one of my ears because it was completely blocked, which isn't very helpful when you're trying to teach! But, thankfully, it finally popped and I'm feeling like my old self again. Thank you guys for all your good wishes!

Lots of love,

Chunky Stitches

The last of my sisters' birthday scarves! This is the third one I've made - the first was the red, white, and blue scarf I made in January, and then there was the watercolor one I finished last month.

This was knitted up using a ball and a half of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in a brown/black mix. I cast 15 stitches on 8mm knitting needles and kept going until it was 47 inches long.

It turned out really soft and chunky, which I love!

Onto some news that I keep forgetting to share (blame it on the flu!): Nancy at the Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe is having a fantastic giveaway. Go on over there and enter - and mention that I sent you!

Big hugs (only maybe not, I don't think you want my lovely germs),

Exciting News!

Just a quick post to say...I've been accepted into a contest!

A few years ago I finished a Teddy Bear Quilt (I first talked about it on this blog here). It was just a fun project that took me a full year to complete, part of a hope chest I'm building up for my future children.

Anyway, there's an annual Quilt & Stitch Art competition here in Dubai, and I thought, why not enter the Teddy Bear Quilt? And I'm in! The competition is Saturday, the 25th of May, so it's still a couple of weeks away.

But everyone has to drop off their pieces by this Wednesday, so I've been super busy: I took it out of storage, went at it with the lint brush, started making a sleeve to attach to the back so it can be displayed, labeled it...

I know there's very little chance of me winning - I'm up against some truly gorgeous quilts, whereas mine is just cute. But I'm so excited that they've chosen me to be included! It's such an honor, and it's going to be so neat seeing this little guy on display.

Wish me luck!

Quilt Square 41

I started on the next row on the American Flag Quilt, which always includes a lot of counting and re-counting...

So this is North Dakota, the Peace Garden State. It was the 39th state admitted to the union, on November 2, 1889.

I'm going to put this piece aside for a little while. I need to get started on stitching up some smalls for the next craft fair - I'm not planning on doing it again until about September, but I have so much to do! In a good way, of course, because I'm excited to participate again!

Best stitchy wishes,

Quilt Square 40

With the excitement of the craft fair behind me, I've turned to my trusty WIP to relax. So here's the newest square on the American Flag Quilt!

This is Colorado, the Centennial State, called so because it was admitted to the union the centennial year. It was the 38th state admitted, on August 1, 1876, 100 years after the Declaration of Independence.

Another row done! I'm getting closer and closer to finishing this wonderful piece. I love it more with every square, I really do.

Lots of love,
